The Attorney General of New Jersey, Jeffrey S. Chiesa, held a press conference reminding the public during Super Bowl Sunday to stay safe and sober behind the wheel. When the New York Giants played in the Super Bowl in 2008, police in New Jersey arrested 176 drunken drivers. This is the second highest total ever in the State of New Jersey on a Super Bowl Sunday. Once fatality occurred from a alcohol-related crash fatality in New Jersey on Super Bowl Sunday in 2008. In 2001, five people died as a result of alcohol-related crashes, which was the last previous time the Giants were in the Super Bowl.

Chiesa emphasized:

"As police patrols have increased on Super Bowl Sunday, arrests have gone up and, thankfully, deaths have declined. During the last four Super Bowls, with stepped-up patrols, there have not been any deaths due to drunken drivers on our roadways. Let's continue that trend and ensure Sunday is a day remembered for Super Bowl glory, not tragedy. I urge fans who drink to have a sober designated driver to get them home safely."

Director of the NJ Highway Traffic Safety gave the following helpful tips:

  • Select and designate a designated sober driver before the party begins and turn over the car keys to that person before the party starts.
  • Use a taxi cab or car service, or ask a sober family member or friend to come drive you, or spend the night where you are.
  • Always report impaired drivers in New Jersey by simply dialing #77. You will be asked to provide the location and description of the vehicle.

  • Even if you are traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep.
