Two people were killed last weekend, and several people were injured, on the New Jersey Turnpike in a car accident when a car crashed into a construction vehicle on Super Bowl Sunday, according to a news report.

The car was reportedly driving north in the truck lane near Exit 12 in Carteret, New Jersey, when it veered into the shoulder and ran into a vehicle which was meant to block traffic from construction workers on the site, according to the report.

The 31-year-old driver of the car, a Pleasantville, New York, man was killed. A passenger, of Westchester, New York, who was sitting behind the driver died after being taken to a hospital in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Another backseat passenger from Westchester was seriously injured, and taken to a Newark hospital. A front seat passenger, also of New York, was not seriously injured in the crash.

Two construction workers sustained minor injuries, according to the news report.

It appears that the cause of the accident may still be under investigation and it has not been reported whether the construction vehicle was properly parked or marked.

As we noted in our Wayne New Jersey Personal Injury Blog last week, New Jersey authorities stepped up their patrols on Super Bowl Sunday and warned the public to remain safe and sober on the roads.

The New Jersey State Patrol reported almost a 100 percent increase in DWI arrests over Super Bowl weekend, compared to the 2008 Super Bowl--the last time the Giants won.

According to preliminary statistics, there were 96 DWI arrests in New Jersey over the weekend. There were 51 in 2008.

Alcohol was not reported to have been a factor in last weekend's tragic crash.
